Basic First Aid – OFA Level 1 Course

OFA Level 1 is now known as Basic First Aid, although it is still commonly referred to as OFA 1. WorkSafeBC has updated its requirements to align first aid training in British Columbia with the rest of Canada, meaning this course now covers similar material to nationally recognized programs such as Red Cross Emergency First Aid.

This Basic First Aid course provides foundational first aid knowledge and prepares participants to respond to common workplace injuries and medical emergencies

Course Overview

This is a full-day, 8-hour course including scheduled breaks and a lunch period.

Participants are required by WorkSafeBC to be trained on the specific make and model of AED used in their workplace.

What’s Covered

  • CPR and AED use
  • How to respond to minor wounds and injuries
  • Airway, breathing, and circulatory emergencies
  • Basic emergency response procedures
  • Completion of records and incident reports
  • What to do until paramedics arrive

This course does not include airway management or oxygen administration.

Certification & Requirements

  • No prerequisites
  • Minimum age: 16 years
  • Participants receive a certificate valid for 3 years
  • Training must be completed in full to receive certification

Red Cross Emergency First Aid is recognized by WorkSafeBC as equivalent to Basic First Aid.

Facility Requirements
Minimum of 500 sq ft of clear floor space is required for group training.
